Local Author Visits Burlington

JC Jackman, visited Burlington students on May 4. Jackman is from Littleton, Colo. and is the author and illustrator of "Adventures in a Faraway Land". He is a lively presenter and the students enjoyed meeting with him and having him autograph some of his children’s books for them. This was Jackman’s second visit to Burlington. Thanks to Lynn Hogan for arranging his guest appearance in our Media Center.

Burlington says GOODBYE...

Kindergarten teacher Pat Fisk is retiring at the end of the 2000-2001 school year after 35 years in the teaching profession. She has enjoyed her time spent in the classroom. "What better way to have spent 35 years than working with young children, watching them grow and learn," she stated. It has also been rewarding for Mrs. Fisk to have second-generation students at the school in the past few years.

As for the future, Mrs. Fisk has no specific plans. She has applied to the Children’s Hospital to hold premature and seriously ill children and hopes this will be an opportunity to continue serving. "My life has been enriched from working with many wonderful children, parents, and faculty."

Secretary Norma Nehf will also be retiring after 26 years in the St. Vrain Valley School District. Mrs. Nehf has been the "glue" that often has held Burlington together. She enjoys hiking and is looking forward to spending time on the trails this summer. She believes the reality of retirement won’t actually hit until the beginning of August, when everyone else is gearing up for another school year and she’s still enjoying the great outdoors. Norma is also looking forward to traveling with her husband in the fall. She will still be volunteering at Burlington since Diane Parenti, her daughter, is a second-grade teacher at the school. "That way," she states, "I don’t have to say goodbye!"

Exchanging Words With The President

Mrs. Karen Hakonson’s second graders exchanged a few written words with President Bush. After the presidential election Mrs. Hakonson’s students wrote letters to Bush telling him things that they had hoped would happen during his presidency. In the first week of May they received an 8 x 10 glossy photograph of him and a letter on White House stationary signed with the President’s bold signature.
The students were delighted. He encouraged them to become good citizens and study hard, and he closed his letter by sending them his best wishes. "It made the children feel so special to receive a letter from the President," Mrs. Hakonson added.
