New Urbanism Defined

The revamped Gunbarrel Town Center (GTC) is in accordance with the concept of new urbanism.  According to information obtained at www.newurbanism.org:

New urbanism promotes the creation and restoration of diverse, walkable, compact mixed-use communities composed of the same components as conventional developments, but assembled in a more integrated fashion, in the form of complete communities.  These contain housing, workplaces, shops, entertainment, schools, parks and civic facilities essential to the daily lives of the resident all within easy walking distance of each other.  (It) promotes the increased use of transit and light rail, instead of more highways and roads.

While the proposed town center won’t have schools or civic facilities, the revised GTC includes the following:

• Walkability
• Connectivity
• Mixed-Use and Diversity
• Quality Architecture and Urban Design
• Traditional Neighborhood Structure
• Increased Density
• Smart Transportation
• Sustainability
Complete details are available at the new urbanism site.
