All Local, All The Time

The Great Pumpkin returns to Niwot

Niwot is throwing its biggest costume party of the year when the 21st Great Pumpkin Party takes place on Saturday, Oct. 27. Children of all ages, dogs of all breeds, and scarecrows from every field are invited to join in the celebration on 2nd Avenue and in Cottonwood Square.

Supported by Niwot’s Local Improvement District, through the Niwot Business Association, and organized by Pat Murphy, owner of Niwot Real Estate, the event has become a much anticipated annual tradition. All activities are free and open to the public.

New to this year’s activities is a scarecrow decorating contest. Families, individuals, teams, and clubs are encouraged to either make or purchase a scarecrow and then embellish it with a costume of any theme. Drop off the raggedy guy or gal at Niwot Real Estate’s office at 7915 Niwot Road prior to Saturday. All of the entrants will be on display up and down the street to add to the ambiance of the day’s celebrations.

Last year’s entertainment introduced a haunted house put on by the Key Club from Niwot High School. The scary abode was a big hit, and this year it will be located in Cottonwood Square. Cottonwood Square will also feature entertainment by juggler and magician Ann Lincoln. Lincoln will once again enthrall children with her performance several times during the day.

Second Avenue will be closed to vehicle traffic between Niwot Road and Franklin Street, from 10 am to 2 pm to keep all participants safe.

Dress up as a family or bring the little ones (children and pets) to trick or treat at businesses on both sides of the street. Cottonwood Square Shopping Center will be welcoming trick or treaters too.

The event is a wonderful way to connect with the community, so each store and office that’s open will be doing something special and handing out goodies to visitors.

A multitude of donated pumpkins from the Charles Nygren family along with other decorations lining 2nd Avenue will help to shift the seasonal mood of the community and welcome autumn with all its glory.

Hayrides begin boarding at Franklin Street and 2nd Avenue and will be hoofing around town from 10:30 am until 1:30 pm.

Niwot Real Estate’s office at the corner of Niwot Road and 79th Street will be decorated to the hilt and the popular petting zoo will complete the setting.

A parade to show off the full regalia of creative costumes will begin at 11:30 am. Participants should assemble at the parking lot at Left Hand Corner, at the intersection of Niwot Road and 2nd Avenue. Everyone, in a costume or not, is welcome to march through downtown Niwot and join in the excitement.

A not-to-be-missed, hysterical dog costume contest sponsored by Left Hand Animal Hospital will take place immediately following the parade in front of Old Oak Coffeehouse. Three top dogs will be chosen as winners, so it’s time decide what character best suits your pawed buddy’s personality.
