Community Comes Together For NHS Football Player

Family and friends of NHS senior Mitch Eutsler have been holding fundraisers to help defray medical costs for treatment of a brain tumor he was diagnosed with last July.

A kickball tournament, attended by over 500 people, silent auction, yard sale and bus trip to Fortune Valley have helped the family both financially and emotionally. Eutsler’s spirits were up at the Oct. 2 yard sale held in front of the school. “If I got it, I just have to deal with it,” he said.

When a routine eye exam revealed a rapidly changing vision prescription, Eutsler underwent an MRI, which revealed the ping-pong ball size tumor. His doctor feels the prognosis is good, due in part to his good physical health. In addition to football, Eutsler participates in basketball and track.

Coach Ron Tesone said, “Mitch has shown incredible courage in working his way through this setback. He has proven to everyone what a positive outlook can do. He has been a great leader for our team and a real inspiration to everyone who knows him. I’m sure Mitch and his family appreciate all of the support the community has shown in helping Mitch kick this thing.”

As of this writing, Eutsler is undergoing radiation five days each week, and still attending football practice. He plans on graduating in May and hopes to attend CSU to study engineering.

CU Band Day

The Niwot High School Band participated in Band Day at CU’s Folsom Field on September 25.

The 105-member ensemble was one of approximately 30 bands from across the state to be judged by nation-wide college band directors. The band was critiqued by music, visual and auxiliary specialists. Band director Kati Sainz noted, “The judges had a lot of nice things to say, and some things to improve upon.”
After the students performed, they viewed a video tape of themselves, and then attended clinics aimed at helping them improve their performance.

This year, as part of their funk and soul genre, audience members will be treated to long-time favorite, “Don’t You Worry About a Thing,” by Stevie Wonder, along with other selections.

The band will be marching in three parades this fall: Homecoming in downtown Niwot, Halloween and Veteran’s Day parades both in downtown Longmont.
