Chiara Freed-Myers Receives Bebe Price Award for Community Service

Niwot High School 2011 graduate Chiara Freed-Myers has been awarded the 2011 Bebe Price Award for Community Service by Foothills United Way. Freed-Myers has been active throughout high school in the St. Vrain Valley group known as TERA: Teens Ending Relationship Abuse.

TERA is an outreach program of the Safe Shelter of St. Vrain Valley. Its mission is to “provide teens with the training and opportunity to educate their peers in the community and schools about the dynamics of interpersonal violence…to heighten awareness and promote prevention.”

Program director Courtney McAllister referred to Freed-Myers as, “My right hand. She exemplifies everything the program is about.” McAllister submitted the winning nomination.

Freed-Myers became involved with TERA as a freshman. She described her experience giving presentations with the group as “a learning process – you learn about yourself.” Freed-Myers, along with other TERA volunteers, has made presentations throughout St. Vrain Valley Schools and the state, traveling as far as Pueblo.

In addition to her work with TERA, Freed-Myers was senior class president, junior class secretary, and student representative for the Niwot High School Education Foundation.

She also participated in clubs, the tennis team and managed the boys’ basketball team.

She has been in advanced drama for three years, during which she wrote some of the skits performed during the students’ One-Act Plays Dessert Theater.

Writing plays is something Freed-Myers loves, and she is considering declaring film studies her major next year when she attends CU Boulder.
