Jane Aust-a-thon

Twenty-one Niwot High School girls watched Jane Austen movies, had a pizza party and high tea – at midnight – in the school library one night in March. The slumber party, organized by librarian Dottie Martin-Stewart, is an annual tradition she started for students who love Austen’s books and the movies based on them.
One section of the school library was transformed into an English garden with fresh flowers and pastel tablecloths. Another section was dedicated to sleeping bags and a movie screen. Students voted for the movies they watched, including Bollywood’s Bride and Prejudice and the BBC version of Emma.

High tea, which included clotted cream and homemade jams, was provided by Cee Dolenc of The Thompson Tea House in Longmont. The slumber party ended early Saturday morning with bleary-eyed students finishing a bit of breakfast before departing.

Quidditch Is Coming

Quidditch, the fictional game from Harry Potter Books, is coming to NHS. Played with balls and brooms, Potter fans across the country have taken up the sport.

The game, which incorporates components from soccer, dodge ball and basketball, is played while flying on a broom, catching a ball, and carrying it to a goal to score. Since “muggle” students cannot fly, they run with a broom between their legs.

The quidditch club is sponsored by Sarah Pomranka. She and four juniors have recruited 30 Harry Potter fans to bring Quidditch to Niwot. Organizer Allison Souhrada is trying to get in touch with teams at Boulder High School and Fairview High School for matches this summer.

Those who are interested in viewing a quidditch game can access videos on the International Quidditch Association website: www.internationalquidditch.org.

Final Exams

Final exams will be given May 23 – 25 and graduation ceremony will be May 28.
